This week we are being asked to look at Altmetrics. I have heard about this in recent weeks, so it was a good exercise to install the app in the browser and test it out. I found an article from Nature: and clicked on the Altmetric it bookmarklet, which resulted in this page: I like the way it bridges the gap in citations in social media versus traditional papers and journals. It makes me wonder when academia will finally recognise the value of social media citation, as this often makes a paper more impactful than in one or two high profile journals, however judging the academic rigour of social media is a tricky business. In the meantime, this is another metric and discourse to add to the debate. Personally I like it and I’m glad I tried it.
